At the midway point in the 2024 NFL season, where do the Indianapolis Colts stand on the waiver wire priority list heading into Week 10?
Following the NFL’s trade deadline, there is one significant change to the waiver wire. Previously, before Tuesday’s deadline, only players with less than four accrued NFL seasons would go on waivers when released. Veterans would become free agents immediately.
However, once the trade deadline has passed, all players who are released moving forward will go on waivers. Then if unclaimed, they become an unrestricted free agent and can sign where they please.
The waiver wire rankings change weekly and are based on a team’s record. So where the Colts currently land heading into Week 10 could change depending on Sunday’s outcome against Buffalo, along with what else happens around the rest of the NFL.
However, for the time being, the 4-5 Indianapolis Colts are 15th in waiver wire priority based on the standings.
So the way this works, if a veteran is released and the Colts put in a claim on that player and so do the Kansas City Chiefs, Indianapolis would be awarded that player because they are 15th in waiver wire priority, while the Chiefs are 32nd at 8-0.
In short, if there are multiple claims, the team with the worst record will always be awarded the player. That player then has to be added to the 53-man roster, which often means a corresponding cut will have to follow.
On the Colts current roster, two players, cornerback Samuel Womack and safety Darren Hall, have both been claimed on waivers this season.
