Where all 11 players released by Manchester United are now from retirement to Serie A

It has been a summer of change at Manchester United.

Not only has the club seen a new manager arrive in the shape of Erik ten Hag, the squad has also undergone a mini-revamp. Despite only three players - Christian Eriksen, Tyrell Malacia and Lisandro Martinez - having come through the door the number of stars who have left is well into double figures. Andreas Pereira departed for Fulham in a deal worth around £10million and a handful of others have left temporarily on loan deals.

The vast majority of departures however have been on free transfers. Here, we look at how at all 11 have got on since their summer exits.

Paul Pogba

The most high-profile departure, French World Cup winner Pogba left United for a second time to join up with Italian giants Juventus.

Despite being the club's record signing Pogba failed to live up to his billing in six years at Old Trafford. He has now reunited with Max Allegri's side although he missed their Serie A opener last weekend owing to a knee injury.

Edinson Cavani

The Uruguayan striker scored 12 Premier League goals in two seasons at United but departed this summer.

Despite his vast experience, which includes winning six French titles, a Copa America and more than 130 caps for his country Cavani remains on the lookout for his next club. Has been linked most recently with Argentine giants Boca Juniors.

Nemanja Matic

The Serbian ended his five-year stay at United and opted for a switch to Italian side Roma. In doing so, the 34-year-old linked up for a third time with former Old Trafford boss Jose Mourinho.

He signed a one-year deal and made a winning start, coming off the bench in the 1-0 win away at Salernitana last weekend.

Jesse Lingard

Lingard's 22-year association with United came to an end this summer and the midfielder penned an emotional message upon his exit.

He wrote: "Born and bred a red. Over the last few weeks, I've been emotional about leaving a club that is family. After 22 years I’ve had so many special memories and moments that I will cherish forever. @ManUtd will always remain in my heart. A massive thank you. Lots of love Jlingz"

After speculation over his next destination, Lingard eventually opted to join newly-promoted Nottingham Forest and has started both their games back in the Premier League.

Juan Mata

Spanish playmaker Mata, who spent eight years at United, is another still searching for a new club.

Aged 34, reports recently suggested that Mata has turned down a number of offers from clubs in the United States. It is believed he wishes to remain playing at a high level in European football.

Lee Grant

Relatively little noise was made when veteran goalkeeper Grant departed Old Trafford. After all, he made just two senior outings in four seasons and was very much back-up, most of the time as third or even fourth choice.

Aged 39, he retired in the summer and is now a first-team coach at Ipswich - bossed by ex-United coach Kieran McKenna.

Paul McShane

Another who hung up his boots, McShane made a surprise return to United in the summer of 2021 as a playing coach for the club's academy. Prior to his second Old Trafford stint, he had spent time at West Brom, Hull and Sunderland amongst other clubs as well as winning 33 caps for the Republic of Ireland.

After featuring a handful of times in Development and EFL Trophy matches last season, McShane has now moved into a full-time coaching role with his work spanning from the under-18s to the under-23s.

D’Mani Mellor

Forward Mellor is now at League One side Wycombe, after earning a deal following a successful period training with them towards the end of last season.

He had been at United since the age of eight but made just one senior appearance, in a Europa League tie back in 2019. He was loaned to Salford last term but struggled to make an impact, featuring just three times. He is already off the mark for his new club, scoring in an EFL Cup tie last week.

Reece Devine

Defender Devine never made a senior appearance for United. Last season he was loaned out twice, to St Johnstone and Walsall.

He signed a two-year deal with League Two Swindon back in June but is expected to be out until at least October with a hamstring issue.

Connor Stanley

Midfielder Stanley spent four years at United after arriving from Birmingham in 2018. He never made the breakthrough though, and upon his release he was offered a deal by third tier Bolton.

He is part of the new Bolton B team and will be hoping to break into the senior Trotters side before long.

Paul Woolston

Goalkeeper Woolston sadly had to call time on his playing career back in March after struggling with a chronic hip injury.

Aged just 24, he was previously on the books of Newcastle before arriving at Old Trafford in 2019. Speaking earlier this year about his decision to hang up his gloves, he said: "It is quite scary. But it is also quite exciting. There is a world out there I haven't even dipped my toe into."
