From the hip street-pop of her early 80s ascendancy to the glacial electronics of the William Orbit-helmed Ray of Light, and the euphoric, glitter-strewn dance-pop of the mid-2000’s' Confessions on a Dancefloor-era, Madonna’s persistent drive to evolve has spawned a vibrant body of work.

But it was back at the close of the 1980s that Madonna proved beyond any doubt that she would become so much more than just a pop cultural relic from the decade of excess.
