Telling a partner to get a job sounds simple until you look at what happens inside the household. One person may bring home the paycheck while the other handles childcare, housework, elder care, school schedules, or a dozen invisible tasks that never appear on a résumé. In another relationship, one partner may have quietly stopped contributing while still expecting the other person to cover the bills. Those situations can look identical from the outside.
That makes the real issue less about employment and more about shared responsibility. A partner does not automatically owe the household a paycheck, but they do owe the relationship a fair contribution. If money keeps getting tighter while one capable adult refuses reasonable work, the conversation needs to become much more direct.
