When Prince Harry's book Spare is released, what he's doing with the profits and what to expect

Prince Harry's tell-all memoir will soon be published, just weeks after his and Meghan Markle's docu-series was released on Netflix.

The book, titled Spare, will explore Harry's life as a member of the British royal family and how he coped with the death of his mother, Princess Diana. It promises 'raw, unflinching honesty' from the Duke of Sussex and will be 'full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom,' according to its official description.

It's believed the book has been named after the term 'the heir and the spare' which is used to describe a monarch and their sibling. Charles became king following Queen Elizabeth II's death in September 2022, meaning that Prince William, Harry's older brother, is now first in line to the throne.

Harry and Meghan's six-episode Netflix series, which was released in two instalments last month, explored the couple's decision to step away from the royal family and Meghan's treatment by the press. The couple also made some explosive claims about the royal family, including Harry talking of the 'terrifying' moment his brother 'screamed and shouted' at him, and when the duchess described feeling suicidal after her treatment by the British media.

Harry has two upcoming broadcast interviews to promote the book; one on US TV show 60 Minutes which will air on Sunday January 8 and an interview with ITV1's Tom Bradby, which will air on the channel on Sunday January 8 at 9pm.

In a first look trailer for the 90-minute interview with ITV, which was filmed in California, the Duke of Sussex admitted “I would like to get my father back, I would like to have my brother back”. The series of clips cut together also heard Prince Harry say: “It never needed to be this way” and reference “the leaking and the planting” before stating “I want a family, not an institution”.

When will Prince Harry's book be released?

Spare will be released on Tuesday January 10 2023. The book will be published in 16 languages via Penguin Random House.

The official description reads: "It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother's coffin as the world watched in sorrow and horror.

"As Diana, Princess of Wales, was laid to rest, billions wondered what the princes must be thinking and feeling-and how their lives would play out from that point on. For Harry, this is that story at last. With its raw, unflinching honesty, Spare is a landmark publication full of insight, revelation, self-examination, and hard-won wisdom about the eternal power of love over grief."

What is Prince Harry doing with the profits from the book?

Prince Harry is supporting British charities with donations from the book's proceeds, according to its description. It states: "The Duke of Sussex has donated $1,500,000 to Sentebale, an organisation he founded with Prince Seeiso in their mothers' legacies, which supports vulnerable children and young people in Lesotho and Botswana affected by HIV/AIDS.

"Prince Harry will also donate to the non-profit organisation WellChild in the amount of £300,000. WellChild, which he has been Royal patron of for fifteen years, makes it possible for children and young people with complex health needs to be cared for at home instead of hospital, wherever possible."
