When people will get the DWP Pensioner Cost of Living Payment and who is eligible

As the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) prepares to roll out its second wave of cost of living payments across the country, pensioners may be unaware that they could be eligible for extra help.

Some could receive an extra £300 which will be paid separately from any other benefit, tax credits, or additional cost of living payment. Unlike the Warm Home Discount Scheme or £400 energy rebate, the payment will be made directly to the recipient's bank accounts.

While the DWP has confirmed that these payments will begin to arrive between November and December, Minister for Work and Welfare, Victoria Prentis, provided a deadline.

"Cost of living payments are being paid automatically alongside the Winter Fuel Payments from mid-November and should be paid by 13 January 2023," she said.

Who is eligible for the Pensioner Cost of Living Payment?

In order to be considered for the Pensioner Cost of Living Payment, you must first be entitled to a Winter Fuel Payment. If you're entitled to a Winter Fuel Payment for 2022 to 2023 then you will receive an extra £300 for your household. This will be separate from any additional Cost of Living payment you may be eligible for as well as tax credits.

In order to receive the Winter Fuel Payment, you must either be born between September 26, 1942 and September 26, 1956 or born on or before September 25, 1942. However, you may not be eligible for the payment if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • Are in hospital receiving free treatment for more than a year
  • Need permission to enter the UK and your granted leave states that you cannot claim public funds
  • Were in prison for the whole week from September 19 to 25, 2022
  • Live in a care home for the whole time from June 27 to September 25, 2022 and got Pension Credit, Income SUpport, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance (JSA) or income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
