When is the World Cup final? Date, kick-off time and teams

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar has already thrown up plenty of shocks and surprises.

Now, with the tournament in the Middle East just days away from its completion, the tournament has whittled down from 32, with France bidding to retain its current crown in Qatar. Gareth Southgate's England were eliminated by France in the quarter-finals, with Harry Kane missing a decisive spot kick to level the scoring at 2-2.

Now with the semi-finals having been played, Lionel Messi's fairytale ending of claiming football's biggest prize at 35-year-old is still a possibility. Argentina eased past Croatia on Tuesday while France ended Morocco's spirited bid for World Cup glory on Wednesday.

The World Cup final is set to take place on Sunday, December 18.

Both BBC One and ITV1 will show the game live here in the UK, with coverage expected to start at 14:00 GMT ahead of the kick-off an hour later.

The World Cup final will be contested between reigning champions France and Argentina, who won the tournament in 1978 and 1986.
