Excitement around the new House of the Dragon prequel series to Game of Thrones is mounting. With a star-studded cast featuring the likes of Matt Smith (Prince Daemon Targaryen), Emma D'Arcy (Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen), Olivia Cooke (Lady Alicent Hightower), Rhys Ifans (Ser Otto Hightower) and Paddy Considine (King Viserys I Targaryen), this is understandable.
The new House of the Dragon series is set around 200 years before the Game of Thrones timeline. It focuses on the events of a civil war which breaks out in the Targaryen household that eventually leaves it diminished.
The final season of Game of Thrones drew mixed reactions. Now, all eyes have turned to the Targaryens in the hope this will reignite viewers’ imaginations.

GOT fans have been holding their breath ever since HBO announced in October 2019 that it was planning to do a prequel around the Targaryen family. So when is the start date and how can you watch?
When does House of the Dragon start?
The epic fantasy drama will land on HBO on August 21. However, UK viewers will have to wait an extra day, with an air date set for August 22 .
Where can I watch House of the Dragon?
You can tune in via Sky Atlantic and the NOW streaming service and it should be available from 2am on August 22. There will be 10 episodes in total.
Is there anything else I need to know about the programme?
Filming locations
House of the Dragon was mainly filmed in the UK, but also in Croatia and Morocco. Hartland Quay in North Devon and Holywell Bay in Cornwall were two of the locations where filming took place in 2021.
Plot
There is some speculation that the series will try to tackle when Aegon Targaryen first arrived in Westeros to conquer the seven kingdoms, but this may be dealt with in a later series. Co-showrunner and director Miguel Sapochnik said on the choice of the latest series’ setting: "The Targaryens span both directions. So as a spine to other possible stories and spin-offs – this is a great place to start."
