What time is the assisted dying vote – and why is it happening again?

  • Members of Parliament debating a revived assisted dying bill in the House of Commons after previous legislation stalled in the House of Lords .
  • The vote is expected to be extremely close, as the previous iteration passed by a majority of just 23 votes but it did not clear all its stages in the Lords, with peers tabling more than 1,200 amendments.
  • The prime minister will refrain from voting to avoid unduly influencing the debate, while Andy Burnham will also not take part in Friday's crucial decision.
  • If passed, the proposed law would permit adults in England and Wales with fewer than six months to live to apply for an assisted death, subject to medical approval.
  • Opponents have raised concerns regarding protections for vulnerable people and palliative care standards, whereas supporters contend the legislation represents long-overdue reform. Voting must start by 2.30pm BST.
