When is season six of Outlander set and what major historical events are we likely to see covered?

It's almost here, season six of Outlander is just under two weeks away from arriving on our screens.

We know Claire, Jamie and the Fraser's Ridge family will be facing not only the threat of the coming Revolutionary War but also the arrival of new faces (enter the Christie Family) and lingering enemies.

But do we know what year the new season of the hugely popular historical drama is going to be set in?

Ever since Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) arrived in the colonies, the shaping of what will come to be known as the United States of America has begun to take shape.

So far, Jamie has kept on the side of the British but this new season will force him to face up to the fight for the future and whether he wants to remain on the losing side.

What year is Outlander season six set?

So far, each of the seasons has matched fairly roughly with the corresponding book number (although parts can be taken from several books at a time) meaning season six is set on the events in A Breath Of Snow And Ashes (ABOSAA).

The sixth in Diana Gabaldon's epic book series takes place takes place in the colony of North Carolina, from early 1773 to late 1776.

What major historical events will it cover?

We know that in the past, the showrunners and Diana haven't shied away from including major historical events and characters meaning we could see some this season.

One which has already popped up in the teasers is the Boston Tea Party, when armed demonstrators against the British Tea Act disguised themselves as Native Americans and boarded the ships throwing the tea into the harbour, which Claire reads about in the newspaper.

Taking place in 1773, it's safe to assume the timing for the new season will match up.

It's also likely that we may see the fallout of "the shot heard round the world" as the first shots of the Revolutionary War are fired at Lexington and Concord in Massachusetts in 1775.

This is heavily hinted at by the description of ABOSAA which states: "The long fuse of rebellion has already been lit. Men lie dead in the streets of Boston, and in the backwoods of North Carolina, isolated cabins burn in the forest."

Therefore, it might be time to buckle in as the Fraser's Ridge clan are dragged kicking and screaming into another famous war that they can't escape.

But as Roger says in the latest season six clip: "If America doesn't become America, who knows what that world will look like?"
