The Islamic religious event of Ramadan will begin soon as Muslims in Liverpool and around the world begin a month of fasting and reflection.
The annual observance, commentating the Prophet Muhammad's first revelation, lasts twenty-nine to thirty days from the sighting of one crescent moon to the next. During daylight hours, Muslims will fast until sunset.
The pre-dawn meal is called the Fajr, while the meal breaking the fast is known as the Maghrib/Iftar. During the day, prayers will be observed. As Ramadan is based on the rising and setting of the moon, timings will vary depending on your location.
Different Mosques may also set different times as to when Ramadan starts. The charity Islamic Relief has provided a full timetable for Ramadan 2023.
Meanings of terms
- Fajr - observed before sunrise
- Zuhr - observed after noon
- Asr - observed in late afternoon
- Maghrib - observed after sunset

Islamic Relief note that the dates for Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr are "provisional and will be confirmed upon the sighting of the new moon".

They are:
