When is Pancake Day 2022? Shrove Tuesday date explained

We're into February, which means Pancake Day isn't far away.

Maybe I'm just hungry but thinking about all that batter and sugar has me drooling more than Homer Simpson.

There's so much choice, too. Whether it's lemon and sugar, or raspberries and maple syrup, or, an old favourite of mine, Nutella, there really is fun for all the family when it comes to Pancake Day - or Shrove Tuesday, to give it its proper title.

But when is the historic day this year and why do we celebrate it?

When is Pancake Day 2022?

Pancake Day this year falls on Tuesday, March 1.

The day always falls precisely 47 days before Easter Sunday, which this year is on April 17.

Since Easter is a little on the late side this year, that means Pancake Day is also a little later than usual, falling in March rather than February.

Why do we celebrate Shrove Tuesday with pancakes?

Ash Wednesday, the day after Shrove Tuesday, is the beginning of lent, the fast commemorating the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert, according to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke.

Since Shrove Tuesday is the last day before the fast, it was the day where traditionally families would use up their rich foods such as eggs and butter - hence the pancakes.

In some parts of the world, Shrove Tuesday is known as Mardi Gras, which is French for "Fat Tuesday".
