The peak of the Irish summer was short-lived and seems to have subsided as normal conditions return for this time of year.
Rain and thunder have been hitting a number of counties as others are experiencing dull and cloudy days with just a few sunny spells breaking through.
While the high-pressure system has moved away from Ireland for now, Met Eireann’s monthly forecast has pinpointed the week it’s due to come back.
However, things will get worse before they get better, and temperatures will drop to normal this week.
Then, from July 29 to August 4, a low-pressure system will be dominant bringing higher than average levels of rainfall - particularly over the northern half of the country - and mixed conditions for the rest.
Despite this, temperatures are due to remain above average for the time of year that week
Reporting some welcome news, the forecaster predicts that from August 5 to August 11 high pressure will return to the country, bringing fairly settled conditions.
Temperatures are expected to be around average in most areas, but some will experience above average - particularly in the far south.
To add to the return of sunshine, rainfall amounts are due to be slightly lower than normal for the time of year that week too.
From August 12 to 18 then, early indications show this bout of better weather staying on with rainfall amounts remaining below average for the time of year.
A good deal of uncertainty remains around the temperatures in this timeframe, but they are expected to stay close to average for all areas.
