When is Dan Walker leaving BBC Breakfast? Presenter confirms exact date

Presenter Dan Walker has confirmed exactly when he will be leaving BBC Breakfast. The 45-year-old announced he was quitting the show last month and now his last day has been revealed.

Dan will be leaving BBC Breakfast after six years to move to Channel 5 News. He is replacing Sian Williams who stepped down from anchoring the show last month. Explaining his reasons for going at the time of his announcement, Dan said: "Channel 5 came with big ambitions, with big plans, and I don't think opportunities like this come around very often and I can't wait.

"I've also had the incredible privilege of working on some iconic programmes over the last few years, both at the BBC and elsewhere, and what I love about this deal is I not only get to present the news but also host a whole range of programmes right across the channel."

When is Dan Walker leaving BBC Breakfast?

Dan has confirmed his last day will be on Tuesday, May 17. It means he has just six shifts left on the famous red sofa and his exit is just two weeks away.

The Strictly Come Dancing star shared the news on Tuesday, May 3 on BBC Breakfast alongside Sally Nugent. "You've got a little bit of news for me, haven't you?" Sally asked her co-host on the show.

"Or an update," Dan responded. "You know you keep asking me when I'm going? Well, I can tell you now officially. May 17 is my last day, so two weeks today."

"That's not many shifts left, is it?" Sally replied.

"If you discount this one because we are on it it's only six," Dan confirmed.

"That's not many early alarm calls," Sally pointed out, before asking: "Is that slightly lovely to know you're going to get some more sleep?"

Dan said: "It is nice but as I have explained to you it was a big decision and it's quite a sad one as well."

He continued: "The other thing to say is thank you to everyone who sent so many lovely messages. One thing I have realised is, because lots of people want to chat to you about this programme because it means an awful lot to an awful lot of people, is it's reminded me how special this show is and how much everybody who watches it loves it, so thank you to everyone who has said some lovely things."

BBC Breakfast continues weekdays at 6am on BBC One.,
