When is Boiling Point out on Netflix and what is the Stephen Graham movie about?

Critically-acclaimed British film Boiling Point is heading to Netflix. The movie stars Stephen Graham as head chef Andy Jones.

The film follows Andy as he is forced to face multiple personal and professional crises on the busiest night of the year at the swanky London restaurant where he works. It is a one-shot movie directed by Philip Barantini - and is an expansion of his 2019 short film of the same name.

The film was well received by critics. It was nominated for four Baftas, including the categories of Outstanding British Film and Best Actor in a Lead Role.

Boiling Point plot

Andy is head chef at Jones & Sons, an upmarket London restaurant which has recently been downgraded from a five to a three star health and safety rating. That is blamed on his record keeping - which deteriorated while he was getting a divorce.

On the night the film is set, the restaurant is overbooked. Guests include a celebrity chef, who Andy previously worked for and to whom he owes money, and a famous food critic.

There is also tension between the restaurant’s management and crew. And then there is a surprise visit from a health and safety inspector.

All the while Andy has to cater to the demands of the customers - including a marriage proposal. And things take a turn for the worse when one diner suffers an allergic reaction.

The drama does indeed reach boiling point and at last Andy is pushed over the edge.

Boiling Point reviews

The film has proved to be a hit with reviewers. The Guardian gave it four stars, with critic Mark Kermode saying: "Audaciously filmed in a single take, Philip Barantini’s low-budget drama serves up a brilliant performance from Graham as a chef on the edge."

He described it as "a divine comedy barrelling towards inevitable tragedy, played out in hell’s kitchen where someone is bound to get burned."

The Independent also gave it four stars. Reviewer Clarisse Loughrey said: "The film is always on the move, and yet somehow oppressively claustrophobic, as the tension gradually builds to the point of no return suggested by its title.

"Boiling Point does a thorough job of parachuting you into the sweaty, unforgiving confines of a restaurant kitchen."

The film also got four stars from the Evening Standard. Critic Charlotte O’Sullivan said: "Some films leave you fed up. This one leaves you feeling well fed. Bon appétit."

Boiling Point Netflix release date

Boiling Point was released in the UK in January, appearing on the big screen while also available to rent on Amazon Prime Video. But it will get its Netflix release on Wednesday, March 23.
