Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has finally been released. The new video game set in a galaxy far, far away launched on Friday (April 28) for consoles and PC.
From California-based developer Respawn Entertainment in collaboration with Lucasfilm Games, Jedi: Survivor was hailed as “the best Star Wars game in 20 years” in reviews ahead of its release. It marks one of the most hotly anticipated games of the year and is a follow up to the 2019 hit Jedi: Fallen Order.
In the new open-world action-adventure game, players take control of Cal Kestis, one of the last remaining Jedi after their near extinction following Order 66. Set five years after its predecessor, Cal is no longer a Padawan but a powerful Jedi Knight and continues his crusade against the Empire.

Its official synopsis reads: “Pushed to the edges of the galaxy by the Empire, Cal will find himself surrounded by threats new and familiar. As one of the last surviving Jedi Knights, Cal is driven to make a stand during the galaxy’s darkest times – but how far is he willing to go to protect himself, his crew, and the legacy of the Jedi Order?”
It is the latest foray into the Star Was universe following the finale of Disney+ series The Mandalorian earlier this month. It joins countless films, TV shows, video games and other media as forming part of the expansive Star Wars timeline.
The sci-fi franchise now comprises 11 live-action films that span from 1977’s A New Hope to 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker and also includes two spin-off films, Rogue One and Solo. The Star Wars canon also includes animated shows The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch, as well as three upcoming live-action Disney+ shows, Ahsoka, Skeleton Crew and The Acolyte.

And if that isn’t enough Star Wars content to satisfy fans, three more live-action films were revealed to be in development by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, including a Jedi origin story set 25,000 years in the past. So where does Star Wars Jedi: Survivor fit into all this?
When does Jedi Survivor take place in the Star Wars timeline?
The previous game, Jedi: Fallen Order, was set five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, which in Star Wars lore took place in the year 19 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin). The final film in the prequel trilogy saw the Jedi all-but wiped out and Anakin Skywalker turn to the Dark Side, becoming Darth Vader.
After this, the few remaining Jedi – including Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda – were scattered around the galaxy and forced into exile. Former Padawan Cal Kestis was forced into hiding from the Empire on the planet Bracca, where he worked as a scrapper salvaging ships from the Clone Wars until the events of the game in the year 14 BBY.
After mastering his abilities, he became a powerful Jedi Knight and continues his journey in Jedi: Survivor, which is set a further five years later. This puts Jedi: Survivor 10 years after Revenge of the Sith, in the year 9 BBY.
This is also the same year that Disney+’s Obi-Wan Kenobi series is set. According to Lucasfilm’s official Star Wars timeline, this means the new video game takes place nine years before the original Star Wars film that saw Luke Skywalker begin his intergalactic Jedi adventure.
