Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II is just around the corner, launching on PC and consoles on October 28.
You would think this means that the first-person shooter will come out on the same day, but it’s actually not as simple as that. When you can play the game’s single-player campaign rests on one simple question: have you digitally pre-ordered?
When does CoD: Modern Warfare II come out?
There are actually two answers to this question, depending on whether or not you have pre-ordered a digital copy or intend to pick up a boxed version on release day.
If you have gone digital via the PlayStation, Xbox, Steam, or Battle.net stores, you receive access to the game’s single-player campaign more than a week early. The mode will unlock on Thursday, October 20, at 6pm BST — an additional perk alongside access to the Early Access Beta, which started and ended in late September.
Everyone else will get access to the single-player campaign alongside the rest of the game when it officially launches on Friday, October 28.
It’s not too late to pre-order it, if you want, but you will likely pay a premium compared to a physical copy. Digitally, it starts at £69.99 on console, while Amazon has a physical version available to order for £59.95.
What can we expect from the CoD: Modern Warfare II campaign?
The pre-order headstart will allow plenty of players to finish the single-player campaign before it arrives in everyone else’s hands. This is especially as past CoD solo campaigns haven’t been known for outstaying their welcome, typically clocking in at four to seven hours.
As per usual, you can expect an intense experience over that short play time, with the usual mix of cover-based shooting galleries and cinematic, memorable set pieces.
Developer Activision has promised “an incredible experience” featuring “offshore sieges with underwater combat, all-out explosive assaults from 30,000 feet above enemy strongholds, and high-stakes, low-profile stealth missions in both plain sight and under the cover of darkness.”
All of this will be undertaken by the familiar faces of the Task Force 141 crew. So expect appearances from Sergeant John “Soap” MacTavish, Captain John Price, Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, and Simon “Ghost” Riley.
