The Ashes pits England and Australia against each other in a five-match cricket series, marking one of the longest-running rivalries in the sport.
Dating back to its first run in 1882, the series gets its name from a satirical headline after England lost to Australia for the first time on home soil in August of 1882.
A day later, the Sporting Times carried a mock obituary of English cricket, writing that: "The body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia.”
From then on, the term ‘Ashes’ was adopted to mark the competition between the two national teams, later expanding to include women’s teams as well.
Here’s when the Ashes 2023 will kick off, as well as how you can watch along at home.
