THE next General Election will take place on July 4, 2024 – when much of Scotland will be enjoying the school holidays.
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak confirmed the date from a drenched Downing Street on Wednesday evening.
However, most of Scotland will be enjoying the school holidays at the time. People may be abroad on holiday, for example.
Here’s a look at when every local authority in Scotland is stopping for the summer holidays.
When do schools shut in Scotland?
- Aberdeen City Council – Term ends on Friday, July 5
- Aberdeenshire Council – Term ends on Friday, July 5
- Angus Council – Term ends on Thursday, June 27
- Argyll and Bute Council – Term ends Friday, June 28
- City of Edinburgh Council – Term ends Friday, June 28
- Clackmannanshire Council – Term ends Friday, June 28
- Comhairle nan Eilean Siar – Term ends Thursday, June 27
- Dumfries and Galloway – Term ends Monday, July 1
- Dundee City Council – Term ends Friday, June 28
- East Ayrshire Council – Holidays from July 1 to August 16
- East Dunbartonshire Council – Term ends Wednesday, June 26
- East Lothian Council – Term ends Friday, June 28

Of the 32 Scottish local authorities, only Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Council will not be in the school holidays.
Pollster Mark Diffley said the date of the General Election was a "gift to the SNP" as it showed a disrespect for Scotland which the party could capitalise on in their rhetoric.
