When Did a Regular Oil Change Become a $150 Errand?

When Did a Regular Oil Change Become a $150 Errand?
A routine oil change can cost far more than an advertised special once synthetic oil, additional quarts, labor, taxes, and optional services enter the bill. Check your vehicle’s maintenance requirements and request an itemized quote before approving extra work – Shutterstock

The oil change used to be the car errand that barely deserved a place on the weekend to-do list. Pull in, hand over the keys, grab a complimentary coffee, and leave with a receipt that didn’t require a second look. Now, a routine visit can approach $150, especially when synthetic oil and additional services enter the picture.

Drivers have good reason to wonder what happened. Engine oil still lubricates moving parts, helps control heat, and carries contaminants toward the filter. The job hasn’t suddenly become rocket science. However, modern vehicles, changing oil specifications, labor costs, and the growing menu of maintenance services have changed the bill. The frustrating part? The price displayed in an advertisement may bear little resemblance to the total at checkout.
