When and where is Storm Ciarán due to hit? UK braces for 'nasty storm' after weather warning

Storm Ciarán is to hit the UK this week and may cause flooding and potential damage to homes.

The Met Office has put yellow warnings in place and has said a "nasty storm" will brew in the UK, following windy and wet weather.

It will be the third storm of the season as we enter into November. The storm follows Storm Babet last week, which battered certain areas of Scotland and North East England.

Where and when is Storm Ciarán due to hit the UK?

The storm will hit the UK on Wednesday night at approximately 9pm, but Britons will see its full impact on Thursday, as the Met Office has said that damage to properties and floods can be expected.

Flood duty manager at the Environment Agency Kate Marks said: “We urge people to stay safe on the coast and to remember to take extreme care on coastal paths and promenades. Flooding of low-lying coastal roads is also possible and people must avoid driving through flood water, as just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move your car.

“People should check their flood risk, sign up for free flood warnings and keep up to date with the latest situation at https://www.gov.uk/check-if-youre-at-risk-of-flooding, and follow @EnvAgency on X, formerly known as Twitter, for the latest flood updates.”

What level weather warning has been issued?

Met Office meteorologist Marco Petagna said: “We’ve had various warnings in force across the UK over the last few days and there are plenty more being issued for the next couple of days.

“The main focus in the next day or two is towards the east of Scotland, north-east England where there is a yellow rain warning until 3am."

The weather forecaster continued to say that there will be persistent rain in these areas and, after that, the focus for heavy showers will be across parts of southern and southeastern England and south Wales. Moreover, there will be some sudden and heavy showers in Northern Ireland.

Other severe warnings laid out by the Met Office in a summary on social media says that a yellow warning for rain covers south Wales and southern England. It will be covered from 6pm on Wednesday until 11:59pm on Thursday.

Meanwhile, a yellow warning for wind covers south and west Wales, South West England, South East England and the east of East Anglia from 9pm Wednesday until 23:59pm Thursday.
