"Work makes me feel like I am contributing to society," Jono Taylor says, as he explains what his employment at Activ Industries' Geraldton workshop means to him.
At 37, he has been working there for the past eight years and, along with 21 others, he will be directly affected when the workshop eventually closes its doors.
While the state and federal governments announced on the weekend that they had agreed to inject $11.8 million to keep the Activ workshops running for the next 18 months, uncertainty remains about their long-term future.
The weekend reprieve followed an outcry after Activ's announcement last month that funding cuts to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) were forcing the closure of seven sites across metropolitan and regional areas.
What happens after that extension ends is causing considerable stress for Mr Taylor, his workmates and their families.
His mother, Fiona Taylor, is campaigning with other parents for the local workshop to remain operational.
The new Activ model is for much smaller hubs and focuses on a move into more mainstream work.
But Ms Taylor is doubtful that will prove successful.
"No, there won't be that opportunity and it is difficult for them to get work out in the community and that's where Activ fills that void," she said.
Hopes rest with petition
They have set up a petition and Ms Taylor is meeting MLC Sandra Carr next week to discuss future options.
Ms Taylor said the structure of the Activ workplace was important to her son.
"It's very important to him and he knows what is involved in his workplace, those that can support him and understand him as well," she said.
Activ has stated that an issue with the NDIS funding model makes the Geraldton branch of the organisation unviable.
It says it will continue to lobby for changes to the funding scheme.
