WhatsApp scam victim loses £6000 as police issue urgent warning

A person lost out on £6,000 in a WhatsApp scam as police issued an urgent warning of an upsurge of cases.

The ongoing scam usually includes a message on WhatsApp, but sometimes a text or phone call, from a person claiming to be a family member, and has the aim of encouraging the recipient to transfer money.

There have been reports across the UK but Northern Ireland police say someone there was duped into handing over £6000 to a scammer.
