What would the Boston Celtics do if the 2024 NBA trade deadline was today? At least one NBA analyst thinks they know the answer to this question. Even though the deadline is still months away, teams are already formulating their strategies for potential moves, and Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz thinks he knows how the Celtics would manage if the deadline was indeed on our doorstep.
Given that Boston can afford to be patient with such a great record out of the gate this season, the trade deadline could prove to be a somewhat dull affair for Celtics fans this campaign. Boston is not likely to make further major moves seeing as those they made this summer put them where they are now in the league’s hierarchy.
“They shouldn’t feel much pressure to do anything at the deadline, instead letting this new-look roster with Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis continue to marinate,” writes Swartz.

“Adding another wing off the bench would be nice, but Boston can afford to be patient,” he adds.
“They are currently filling 14 of the maximum 15 roster spots, leaving one open for a potential buyout candidate following the trade deadline. Of all the potential landing spots for championship-chasing veterans to go to, the Celtics should be at the top of the list.”
“Boston shouldn’t feel like it has to do anything at the deadline, as their big trades have already been made,” writes the B/R analyst.

If the right sort of player who could help consolidate talent on the bench becomes available, we would not be surprised to see it, but we concur with Swartz here.
If a move is to be made at all based on what we see so far, it’d likely be for some additional big man depth or perhaps a more established wing.
But as the B/R writer suggests, the Celtics can wait out the buyout market for players making less than the full MLE at present.
