Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk was left confused after Joel Matip’s goal was disallowed for the Reds in their clash with Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.
Jurgen Klopp’s men seemed to take the lead halfway through the second-half of the match, with Matip heading in at the back post to beat Edouard Mendy from a rehearsed set-piece routine.
However, in the build-up to the goal, Van Dijk was offside and prevented Blues’ right-back Reece James from being able to defend the free-kick.
After a VAR review, referee Stuart Atwell was told to consult the monitor, where he made the decision to rule the goal out.
The decision came about in a game that had all the tempo of a thriller, without the goals to show for it.
Christian Pulisic could have given the Blues the lead early in the game, but saw his chance saved well by Caoimhin Kelleher in the Liverpool goal.
Mendy was then called into action at the other end, making a fantastic double save to deny Naby Keita and then Sadio Mane from close-range.
Mason Mount then had two chances either side of half-time, the first being a shot inside the box that went just wide.
The second was a similar chance, but the post was the saviour for the Reds on that occasion.
Then came the disallowed goal for Klopp’s side, which caused some confusion after the decision was reached.
Van Dijk was seen saying: “I didn't even touch the ball,” shortly after the game went back to level terms.
The Dutchman was also seen speaking with Atwell after the game, quizzing the ref with: "How is that offside?"
However, the decision was less about him touching the ball, but interfering in play while in an offside position.
It gave the Blues a sigh of relief, before they scored their own disallowed goal in an emotional rollercoaster at Wembley.
