What Trevoh Chalobah and Edouard Mendy did to Wesley Fofana in Chelsea defeat to Dinamo Zagreb

It's safe to say Chelsea's Champions League campaign did not get off to the perfect start. Mislav Orsic's 13th-minute goal ensured that after he outpaced Wesley Fofana from the halfway line to net the game's only goal.

Thomas Tuchel did not hold back in his assessment of the game, his players or himself following the game and would have been wondering what he must do to turn around Chelsea's form. The Blues have not kept a clean sheet since the season's opening day and have lost three away games in a row.

Of course, all that is someone else's concern now after he was sacked on Wednesday morning.

Dinamo became the second team to beat four different top-flight opponents from London in Europe, after Juventus. The Blues faltered to just their third opening match loss in the Champions League in 19 entries.

Chalobah and Mendy pat Fofana on the back

How Chelsea conceded was not ideal. Brunot Petkovic's flick-on was enough to see Orsic drive at goal to take on Kepa Arrizabalaga one versus one leaving Wesley Fofana languishing in vain as he tried to keep up to put in a crucial foot in. It was not to be as the young defender left himself with too much work to do as the backline was caught flat and could only watch on as Orsic finished for the game's only goal.

It seems Fofana felt responsible, and when the half-time whistle went, it was obvious that the Frenchman was unhappy with his 45 minutes as he trailed Chelsea's stars on his way off the pitch. Both Trevoh Chalobah and Edouard Mendy made their way from the Chelsea bench to meet their teammate. The duo went to either side of Fofana before placing a gentle hand of encouragement upon his back to try and cajole him before entering the tunnel.

Sterling was furious on the bench there after coming off

No Chelsea player appeared happy with their performance which is understandable. When their time on the pitch was over, most headed straight off the pitch as quickly as they could to disappear into the depths of the ground with a cursory glance of appreciation to supporters.

Those substituted were afforded no such rapid escape as was seen with Raheem Sterling. The summer addition enjoyed a fruitless evening and even ended up close to a central midfielder before his time on the pitch was done. Sterling's displeasure was obvious as he made his way to sit down on the bench. The England international looked furious with himself rather than the decision to replace him as the Blues searched for a way back into the game.

Mateo Kovacic's shining moment

Much had been made of Kovacic's return to Dinamo in the build-up to the game, and the Croatian star was obviously held in high regard by the local media and supporters alike. His return to his nation's capital was clearly significant for him, too. While Chelsea were booed onto the pitch for their warm-up, he received a cheer and received garnered a smattering of applause when his name was called over the tannoy.

At the base of Chelsea's midfield, the 28-year-old attempted to get Chelsea moving with some incisive passing, but like so much of the Blues' play, it just didn't quite come off during his hour on the pitch. After the match, Kovacic hit all the right notes, however.

As the players made their exit from the stadium, Kovacic delivered his Chelsea gear to the staff inside Stadion Maksimir, initially looking to leave in flip-flops and his underwear. He was soon kitted out and delivering answers to the Croatian press as his teammates headed straight for the coach.

Thomas Tuchel at full time

The German coach left the pitch quickly come the full-time whistle. Tuchel often goes to greet his players and the opposition in the centre of the turf in congratulations or commiserations. However, he made a bee-line on Tuesday night to get through his post-match duties without hesitation.

The 49-year-old was quicker to arrive at his press conference than a number of journalists, who were still taking their seats as the frustrated figure looked to get his assessment out of the way. His television interviews perhaps showed a sense of resignation, but when he faced the written press, his demeanour was more of anger and frustration.

Even in his anger, he still managed to acknowledge supporters as he departed, however.
