
Covid-19 cases were at a high level once again in July as experts warned the country had entered its “fifth wave” of infections following the emergence of new Omicron subvariants BA.4 and BA.5.
While the infection rate has since tailed off from 4.6m cases per day last month to just 120,000 in August, the spike was a timely reminder of how quickly the situation can change and of the threat still posed by the coronavirus.
