What Titans are getting in wide receiver Chris Moore

The Tennessee Titans made a long-awaited veteran addition to their receiving corps. on Wednesday when they inked former Houston Texan Chris Moore to a one-year deal.

While Tennessee desperately needed a veteran option for the group, Moore isn’t exact the kind of impact signing fans were looking for to complement Treylon Burks.

However, when you look at it as a depth signing for the bottom half of the depth chart, the move is actually a decent one, as Moore tallied more receiving yards than any Titans wideout in 2022 (548).

Moore is also a solid chain-mover, as 24 of his 48 receptions in 2022 went for first downs.

Titans fans are understandably not excited about the move considering the team’s dire need near the top of the depth chart, but Mark Lane of Texans Wire is a bit higher on him than most.

Here’s what Lane had to say about Moore in a recent Q&A we did with him.

What are Moore's strengths?

ML: Believe it or not, but Moore was effective at taking over as the No. 1 receiver. His biggest game was against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14 when he caught 10 passes for 124 yards in a game that lacked Houston’s top two wideouts, Nico Collins and Brandin Cooks. The passing game was still alive thanks to Moore. Another example is Week 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles. Both Collins and Cooks were out again, but Moore caught four passes for 43 yards and a touchdown. Considering the quarterback play from Houston last year as well. It would be one thing if Moore had these results with a Pro Bowler throwing him the ball; he did it with Davis Mills.

What are Moore's weaknesses?

Raymond Carlin III-USA TODAY Sports

ML: Moore is inconsistent and doesn’t have a lot of tools to beat a team’s best cornerback. There is a reason he hasn’t had very many opportunities in his career and he is on his third team of his career. It’s not like he’s Marvin Jones and has just had the misfortune of playing for cheap teams that don’t want to pay receivers. Sometimes he simply struggles to get separation. It was admirable the way he was able to fill in when needed desperately for Houston, but he couldn’t be a top receiving option for a whole season, not with teams actively scheming to stop him.

What role is Moore best suited for?

ML: Moore is entering the phase of his eight-year career where the experience gained can mesh with his existing athleticism, but he is also right at the edge of spoiling. As long as the Titans cultivate the top of their receiving corps. and keep Moore as depth, they should be fine. Moore has proven he can step up when called upon, but don’t lose perspective if he has to man a top receiver role for an extended period.
