What the planned Nottinghamshire council tax rises mean for you so far

The majority of people living in Nottingham will be paying an extra £70 in council tax over the next financial year under current plans from local authorities. Councils have been preparing their budgets and as part of this, proposals have been released for council tax charges that will take effect from April.

Proposals have so far been released from Nottingham City Council, Nottinghamshire County Council and Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue. People in Nottingham will pay the city and fire service tax rate and similarly, people in the wider county will pay the county and fire service tax rate.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced late last year a change which means that local authorities can raise council tax by 5% and fire services can also raise their share of tax by £5 without holding a referendum. Nottingham City Council is planning a 4.99% rise, whilst the county is planning one of 4.84%.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue has laid out a series of options in terms of its council tax, but says a £5 increase would make its finances "far more manageable." For people in Nottingham, council tax for the city council, police and crime commissioner and fire service is collected by the city council.

For people in Nottinghamshire, council tax for district councils, the county council, police and crime commissioner and fire service is collected by the district council covering their area. Nottinghamshire's district councils and the police and crime commissioner are yet to release their proposed council tax rises.
