What the judges of Pop Idol are up to now - from A-list careers to court cases

Pop Idol - now there's a show many among us will reminisce fondly about.

Jumpstarting the careers of many television giants in the modern era, the ITV competition reality show was a popular series, albeit only running for two seasons.

Presenters Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly (recognise the names?) were joined by judges Neil Fox, Nicki Chapman, Pete Waterman and Simon Cowell to find the best new young pop singer in the UK, based on viewer voting and participation.

The show birthed careers for the likes of Michelle McManus, Will Young and Gareth Gates, and even went on to be the inspirations for mid-2000s TV staples The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent.

But what are the judges and presenters of Pop Idol up to these days? Find out more below:

Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly

Look at those baby faces! (ITV)

Still youngsters at the time of Pop Idol, Ant and Dec's popularity had been growing exponentially even before their stint presenting the ITV show.

The pair first found fame on children's drama Byker Grove, with Declan joining a season before Ant in 1989. After this, the pair turned to music, and released BRIT Award-winning hit 'Let's Get Ready to Rhumble'.

Then Pop Idol came around, and the comedy duo's infectious personalities garnered them a spot in television future stardom.

After this, Ant and Dec have gone on to produce some of television's best moments, presenting I'm A Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here!, Britain's Got Talent and their very own Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway.

The pair have cemented their position in Saturday night television extremely well, but it wasn't always plain sailing for them.

In 2018, Ant was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and subsequently paid an £86,000 fine for being double over the legal limit.

Since then, the star has went tee-total and said at the time that he 'thanked God everyday' that nobody was seriously injured or killed due to his actions.

Neil Fox

Neil was a radio DJ and journalist before his judging stint on Pop Idol, being dubbed as 'Foxy' in the 2000's, before changing his persona to 'Dr Fox'.

He was a judge on Pop Idol between 2001 and 2003 alongside Simon Cowell, Pete Waterman and Nicki Chapman.

He was a popular presenter on Capital FM for many years, but left for Magic FM after not securing the breakfast slot on the radio broadcasting channel.

In 2014, Neil was arrested on suspicion of historical sex offences, but was later cleared of all ten charges against him.

Westminster magistrates said the six alleged victims were believable but the bench "could not be sure that in the context it was a criminal offence".

Now, Neil Fox hosts the weekday Drivetime show 4-7pm, well as The Heritage Chart on Sundays 5-7pm on London’s DAB station, Nation Radio.

Nicki Chapman

Before Pop Idol, Nicki Chapman was working her way up the music industry ladder, working as promotional managers and even Brilliant! PR, the company that represented the likes of Amy Winehouse, Billie Piper and even David Bowie!

She made an appearance on Pop Idol as a judge of the programme, and quickly moved onto television presenting, which she is currently working in now.

Nicki has presented some popular TV shows, such as Channel 4's Escape to the Sun, BBC Breakfast News, BBC travel show Holiday and ITV1 celebrity cookery show Soapstar Superchef.

Pete Waterman

Before Pop Idol, Pete Waterman had an illustrious music industry career, managing many popular bands that we now know to be superstars.

Notable artists include Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, The Specials, Steps, Sinitta and Jason Donovan. Waterman also appeared in the iconic Steps music video 'Tragedy'.

Waterman was one of the contestants in the 2009 series of the BBC programme Celebrity MasterChef, but was knocked out in the first round.

Most recently, the music producer appeared on The X Factor: Celebrity in 2019 as part of the all star audience curated by Simon Cowell.

Simon Cowell

Now here's a television regular, Simon Cowell. Pop Idol was at the beginning of his career, and really kickstarted the pop mogul's rollercoaster into stardom.

Since Pop Idol, Simon founded company Syco in 2005, and created the careers for hugely popular music groups, such as One Direction, Little Mix and Fifth Harmony.

He became a judge on Britain's Got Talent, American Idol, The X Factor, and many spin-offs as well.

Most recently, Cowell judged on a spin-off version of Canada's Got Talent called Canadian Family's Got Talent, which was carried out virtually during the coronavirus pandemic.
