Celtic left Warsaw with their first Champions League group stage point after a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk. But they will be ruing missed chances on a night where they caused the Ukrainian's all sorts of bother without finding that decisive goal.
The Hoops took a deserved lead after 10 minutes when Reo Hatate 's effort deflected off Artem Bondarenko and into the net. However in-form winger Mykhaylo Mudryk equalised on 29 minutes with the hosts ending the first half with the momentum.
Ange Postecoglou made a tactical tweak at the break, taking Sead Haksabanovic off in place of Daizen Maeda. The Japanese striker had several gilt-edged chances to score in the second half while Giorgos Giakoumakis and Matt O'Riley also blazed efforts over the bar. And Aiden McGeady, Chris Sutton and Pat Bonner all agreed that Postecoglou's decision making and substitutions were key to the Hoops' performance although they acknowledge that they should've been taking all three points back to Glasgow.
Here's what the pundits had to say after a night of 'what ifs' for Celtic as the Parkhead club still hunt for their first Champions League win since September 2017.
Aiden McGeady
"Ange Postecoglou will be very positive tonight. The changes completely transformed the second-half, with Mooy coming on to dominate midfield and Maeda bringing in an element of pace to the attack, and with so many chances created, it shows how fine the margins are at this level.
"Shakhtar will be absolutely delighted that they've got a point out of that game. It puts a massive slant on the table when you see Shakhtar sitting top.
"Celtic didn't start the second half great, but they took control of the game after the changes. It could've finished 4 or 5-1. It should've finished 4 or 5-1.
"We were talking before the show about Postecoglou being a little bit defeatist, and let down after the Real Madrid game."
Chris Sutton
"It's a brilliant finish (to equalise) but Callum McGregor didn't need to commit and then Shakhtar actually dominate for the rest of the first half, they had control.
"But Celtic, I mean, they will be rueing chance after chance. At this level you want to get out of the group you have got to be putting these chances away.
"Giakoumakis, such a good finisher normally, really good first touch I know it's on his left foot but he's got to hit the target."
Pat Bonner
"I think the changes made the difference, I thought Aaron Mooy had a good game, picking passes down their sides.
"They have the bench now, Celtic, and the bench is so important. Giakoumakis had the best chance of all, you'd expect your striker, at this level, to put that away, or at the very least get that on target.
"I think Ange Postecoglou will be positive because his side have dominated for long spells and Shakhtar were on their knees by the end."
