What TeamViewer shirt announcement means for Manchester United

TeamViewer's spell as Manchester United's shirt sponsor will be the shortest by a considerable distance.

Sharp, perhaps the sponsor most synonymous with United, graced their Adidas and Umbro shirts for 18 years until Vodafone's six-year stint started in 2000, coinciding with the mobile phone boom.

AIG enjoyed a short but trophy-laden four years on Nike shirts between 2006 and 2010 until AON's four-year stretch before Chevrolet had the privilege for an unsuccessful seven years that spanned three managers. TeamViewer imagery started appearing at Old Trafford last year.

The prospect of United players donning shirts without a sponsor's logo across their torso, a la Nottingham Forest, would generate approval from many supporters but sources say there will be no change until a new shirt partner is identified. Sources have said TeamViewer will definitely remain on United shirts this season and possibly all of next season.

The TeamViewer agreement was not as lucrative as previous partner Chevrolet, with some sources suggesting it was worth around £47million a year whereas Chevrolet's was £64m.

The TeamViewer partnership, a five-year deal upon announcement in March 2021, was secured amid a depressed market due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It emerged earlier this year TeamViewer was struggling to buttress their partnership with United due to its deteriorating market conditions post-pandemic. United sources say TeamViewer's premature end leaves the club in control and they will seek a new long-term shirt sponsor in a normalised market.

After United confirmed their intended participation in the Super League in April 2021, some sponsors halted discussions with the club.

United have not secured a training ground sponsor since Aon's seven-year deal ended last year and Adidas's ten-year deal is due to expire in 2025. Blockchain Tezos was announced as United's training kit sponsor in April.

TeamViewer could be retained as a global partner if the option is exercised.
