What strikes are happening in December? From train drivers to nurses

Rail staff, nurses, civil servants, bus drivers and postal workers are among those set to walk out in the weeks before Christmas, with some strikes planned for January 2023 as well.

Trade unions have been calling for better pay for their members as the cost of living crisis worsens and inflation continues to rise. Many of the strikes are a continuation of ongoing disputes, including the rail workers strikes, which have been taking place since the summer.

Now, the action planned to protest against salary stagnation and working conditions happening almost every day this month, threatening widespread disruption across Britain as Christmas approaches. The country’s unions, representing workers from a wide range of public-facing professions, have concluded that they have no choice but to undertake industrial action as their calls for improved pay and working conditions go unanswered.

Some industrial action is planned to occur in Scotland only, and driving examiners plan to strike in different parts of the country on different days. Here are all the dates you need to know about.

Rail strikes

The Transport Salaried Staffs Association (TSSA) have called off planned rail strikes in December to put an offer to it's members, but the Rail, Maritime and Transport union (RMT) strikes are going ahead for Tuesday 13 December, Wednesday 14 December, Friday 16 December, and Saturday 17 December. Industrial action is also planned for Saturday 24 December through to Tuesday 27 December, and further dates in January.

RMT members who work on the Eurostar service plan to walk out on Friday 16 December, Sunday 18 December, Thursday 22 December, and Friday 23 December.

Additionally, there will be an overtime ban across the railways from 18 December until 2 January, which will affect the number of services that can run. Staff at Avanti West Coast will strike on Sunday 11 and Monday 12 December as part of a regional strike.

Royal Mail strikes

For postal workers, members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) are set to walk out on Friday 9 December, Sunday 11 December, Wednesday 14 December, Thursday 15 December, Friday 23 December, and Saturday 24 December. Most post offices are expected to open on these days, although some will be impacted by strike action, but any letters put in postboxes are likely to be subject to delays.

Nurse strikes

Nurses in England, Wales and Northern Ireland will stage the biggest strike in the history of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) this month. Up to 100,000 members will walk out at 65 NHS organisations on 15 and 20 December for 12 hours at a time, taking place between 8am and 8pm on both days.

Nurses are calling for a rise in pay of five per cent above inflation, as well as better working conditions amid a huge shortfall in nursing staff across the country. Thousands of 999 call handlers, ambulance technicians, and paramedics are also due to strike in December, but the exact date hasn't been set yet.

Civil servant strikes

Civil servants in a massive number of departments, including the DVLA, Ofsted, and the SLC all voted for industrial action, and the PCS said action will start in mid-December and continue for a month.

Members of the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) who are employees of National Highways, which operates and maintains roads in England, will walk out from 16 December to 7 January. The strikes are due to happen on different days in different regions, with workers in the North West set to walk out on 16 and 17 December.
