What Sir Alex Ferguson has said about Carlo Ancelotti amid Manchester United job links

Sir Alex Ferguson has already hailed Carlo Ancelotti as “one of the best managers the game has seen” amid reports linking the current Real Madrid boss with Manchester United.

Ancelotti is under consideration for United manager’s job — according to ESPN — as the club continue their search for a permanent appointment. The Reds are looking to have a deal arranged for their new man before the end of the season.

Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag remain the frontrunners, having been linked to the role since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s sacking in November. Other names, such as Brendan Rodgers and Luis Enrique, have been touted as possible successors to interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

The Ancelotti links come amid claims the Italian is under pressure at Madrid, having lost the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain. Pochettino has been suggested as a possible replacement for the former AC Milan and Chelsea boss at the Bernabeu — which could scupper any attempts from United to appoint the Argentine.

But it's claimed Ferguson has recommended that United consider bringing Ancelotti in on a short-term basis. The Scot has a great admiration for the Italian, having lavished him with praise ahead of a UNICEF charity game in 2015.

"Carlo Ancelotti is one of my good friends and also one of the best managers the game has seen," Ferguson told the Daily Mail. "He is a great guy and I think he'll be back in the game shortly, there is no doubt about that. People with that ability don't stay out of it for too long.

"Carlo has an unbelievable record in the European Cup both as a player and manager – winning it twice in both roles with AC Milan, as well as winning it again as a manager at Real Madrid.

"I don't think anyone else has done that so he's on a pedestal on his own in that respect."
