We are so, so close people — my advent calendar has been ripped apart and Mariah Carey is blasting through the shops which means we are counting down the days before Santa comes down that non-existent chimney and we hopefully get a boat-load of presents.
While family group chats are fracturing over who’s hosting the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has finally dropped the goods — the official forecast for Christmas Day 2025 — and it’s a full buffet of Aussie extremes.
Spoiler alert: this Christmas is serving weather whiplash from coast to coast. Perth’s gearing up for a 41°C scorcher while Melbourne and Hobart are on standby for a cold snap straight out of July.

According to BoM’s final forecast, Perth and Brisbane will take out the title for Australia’s hottest capitals this year — with expected tops of 41°C and 34°C respectively. Meanwhile, Melbourne and Hobart are basically staging a Christmas cosplay of winter, with forecast highs of just 18°C and 15°C.
“If Melbourne only reaches 17C, it will be Melbourne’s coldest Christmas Day since 2006,” senior meteorologist Jonathan How told AAP. “Quite the extremes across both ends of the country.”
Here’s how that’s likely to play out around the country.

Sydney
Sydney’s shaping up for a mild, kinda meh Christmas — 19°C overnight, 23°C tops, and a passing shower or two. Consider it prime weather for backyard cricket without melting into the pitch.
Melbourne
Outfit roulette remains undefeated, but this time it’s all jumpers. Expect a top of just 18°C, a medium chance of morning showers, and winds up to 40km/h. Good luck keeping your paper hats on through lunch.
Brisbane
It’s giving muggy, stormy and chaotic — just how Brissie likes it. Expect 23°C overnight, peaking at 34°C with a storm or two rumbling in late arvo. Locals: you know the drill — dash for cover, then back to the esky.
Adelaide
Adelaide’s keeping it chill this year — figuratively, not literally. Cloud is expected to clear through the day with a top of 25°C. Perfect ‘not sweating through lunch but still summer’ conditions.
Perth
It’s official: Perth wins (or loses?) Christmas 2025 with an extreme 41°C forecast. Thankfully Boxing Day cools down to a breezy 27°C.
Hobart
Sorry Hobart, your “warm by Hobart standards” streak has ended. Expect a very brisk 15°C with morning showers and even the chance of small hail. Yes, hail. Might be time to swap the pavlova for pudding.
Darwin
Still wet, still stormy, still very Darwin. Expect 26°C overnight and 32°C by midday, with a guaranteed storm cameo or two. Locals won’t even flinch.
Canberra
Canberra’s keeping it mild and friendly — a partly cloudy 27°C with just the slightest chance of a shower. Very polite weather for the nation’s capital, really.
Christmas Day weather 2025 for regional cities
- Bendigo / Ballarat: Warm with slightly drier conditions than coastal Victoria — good conditions for long lunches that don’t end in sweat‑soaked regret.
- Newcastle / Wollongong: Expect low 20s with a shower or two.
- Cairns / Townsville: High humidity and tropical storms on repeat. Locals know the drill.
- Launceston: Expect a high of 17°C and keep safe as the BoM have issued a severe weather warning for damaging winds in the area.
Whether you’re in a jumper or a swimsuit, Christmas 2025 is giving chaos. A mix of heat, hail, humidity, and someone complaining anyway. Merry Christmas, Australia.
