Excitement is building for these games and we can’t wait to welcome visitors from around the world to enjoy the celebrations on and off the pitch. We are delighted to have played our part in preparing the city to host the event and proud that the opening celebrations are being staged here. The eyes of the world will be upon us and the iconic Quayside will provide an amazing backdrop for the Fan Village with the zip-wire giving people an exhilarating way to see the city.”
The tournament kicks off in Newcastle, when England play Samoa at St James' Park on Saturday. Kingston Park will host three matches.
Earlier this week, the tournament organisers announced the Kaiser Chiefs as the headline act at St James’ Park in what is expected to be the biggest, best and most inclusive Rugby League World Cup in history.
The Rugby League World Cup was originally set to be held in 2021 but was moved to 2022 due to coronavirus travel restrictions.
