What Rodrigo Bentancur did vs Son Heung-min's South Korea to send Tottenham fans into frenzy

Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur stole the show for Uruguay in their World Cup opener against South Korea on Thursday with a sublime moment in an otherwise forgettable match.

The spotlight going into the game was focused on Bentancur's more established teammates, such as Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, as well as the emerging young stars in Real Madrid's Federico Valverde and Liverpool's Darwin Nunez.

As both sides toiled to create clear goalscoring opportunities, with Diego Godin's header coming off the post the closest either side got to breaking the deadline, it was the Tottenham man's scheming in midfield that took the eye.

Son, who was donning a face mask during the game following surgery on an eye fracture last week, had a few opportunities and came closest with a long-range strike in the second half which sailed a yard wide of the post.

In the 56th minute, the Uruguay number six took the eye after he picked up the ball on his own corner flag after dispossessing a South Korea forward, and then with a sublime bit of skill, he turned away from two hapless defenders before riding another challenge and winning his side a free kick from an almost impossible situation.

The moment was met by a gasp of shock by BBC commentator Danny Murphy, with the former Liverpool and England midfielder actually mistaking Bentancur for Valverde because of the trickery and skill the Spurs midfielder was able to display.
