What protests are taking place in London this weekend?

Demonstrators and activists will take to central London this weekend, in what has become a regular occurrence on the streets of the capital in recent months.

According to Amnesty International: “The UK’s fundamental rights to peaceful protest are rapidly disappearing as police forces begin to use the vast range of new anti-protest powers.” However, some Brits continue to mobilise whenever they can, in vast numbers, to raise awareness of crucial issues.

This weekend is quieter than usual on the protest-front, but there are still a handful of local actions that you can join.

Here’s what you need to know about the action and demonstrations scheduled for London this weekend.

Here are the protests this weekend

Saturday, January 24

Re-Open Hammersmith Bridge, Hammersmith Bridge, 2pm to 3pm

Local residents, campaigners and political leaders are meeting to demand the reopening of Hammersmith Bridge, which has been closed to vehicles for nearly seven years.

Protestors are demanding a new taskforce meeting, agreement to funding, repairs to the bridge and restoration of bus routes.

Hands off Greenland, Trump, US Embassy, 10am to 2pm

A protest against Donald Trump’s acquisition of Greenland is taking place outside the US embassy. Participants have been urged to bring flags and banners.

Trump announced “the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland” on social media. This could involve mineral rights and permission to build more military bases on the territory, according to reports.

United Against Digital ID, Marble Arch, 1pm

The People’s Platform has organised a protest against digital ID. An Instagram post reads: “Resist ‘convenience’ Reject Control”.

On Tuesday, the UK government has seemingly rowed back on plans to enforce a mandatory digital ID card to prove the right to work in the UK.
