What protests are taking place in London this weekend?

Two anti-racism events are taking place in the capital this weekend (Lesley Martin/PA) - (PA Wire)

Demonstrators and activists will take to central London this weekend, in what has become a regular occurrence on the streets of the capital in recent months.

This weekend, two Stand up for Racism events and a protest for “peace, justice and equal rights” in Israel and Palestine are taking place.

According to Amnesty International: “The UK’s fundamental rights to peaceful protest are rapidly disappearing as police forces begin to use the vast range of new anti-protest powers.” However, some Brits continue to mobilise whenever they can, in vast numbers, to raise awareness of crucial issues.

Here’s what you need to know about the action and demonstrations scheduled for London this weekend.

Here are the protests this weekend

Saturday, December 6

Women Against the Far Right, The Little Wonder Cafe, Emirates Stadium, 10.30am

Stand Up to Racism has organised a mass leafleting event before the Arsenal Women v Liverpool Women game on Saturday. The event is geared to fight the rise of the far right and “say no to racism in women’s football”.

Croydon Stand Up to Racism, Lunar House, Croydon CR9 2BY, 10am

Stand up to Racism South London has organised a counterprotest to a Horley Patriots rally.

An Instagram post reads: “Croydon Stand Up to Racism is calling on all anti-racists and anti-fascists to oppose their vile, bigoted presence in our wonderful multi-cultural town. We know refugees are not to blame, so we will stand up to the hateful minority who are trying to divide and attack our community.”

Sunday, December 7

We’re Standing Together, Kings Cross station, N1C 4TB, 1pm

Standing Together has organised a vigil and protest to mark International Human Rights Day in solidarity with Palestinians and Jewish Israelis demanding “peace, justice and equal rights”.

Participants will meet by the IFO (bird cage) near Kings Cross station to hear Palestinian and Israeli speakers, first-hand testimony from the West Bank’s olive harvest, music and poetry.
