CJ Stroud wasn’t the only top draft prospect that new Carolina Panthers quarterbacks coach Josh McCown publicly expressed his opinion about. Thanks to Josh Norris and Underdog Fantasy, we also already have his thoughts on Bryce Young.
Just as he did with the Ohio State standout, McCown joined Norris on a January episode of Scheme to break down Young’s game. The two took a sample size of the 2021 Heisman winner—10 throws from his this past season’s matchup with LSU, to be exact—and the results were largely positive for the kid McCown calls “a point guard.”
“He has a playmaking ability that’s rare,” he said of Young. “And I think that’s what’s catapulted him up into this conversation of being a top-five pick. And so with his size and his frame and his athleticism, there’s a lot to be concerned with—but there’s also a ton to love.”
Will the Panthers, though, love him enough to make what’ll presumably be a pricey leap?
Carolina, as they would with Stroud, will probably have to trade up from the ninth overall pick to have a shot at the Alabama star. But will that six-foot, 194-pound frame give owner David Tepper, general manager Scott Fitterer and head coach Frank Reich pause on such an investment?
If history is any indicator, perhaps—as Reich typically favors taller passers. Additionally, Fitterer did say—in an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio about a week ago—that there will be a “certain threshold” in what they want from a physical standpoint.
In any event, we’ll soon see where both Young and the Panthers stand come April.
