What Jordan Henderson did before Mohamed Salah penalty as new Liverpool trick works again

Liverpool continued their improving Champions League campaign with a comfortable win over Rangers on Tuesday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold curled in a free-kick and Mohamed Salah netted a penalty as the Reds earned a 2-0 triumph over the Scottish Premiership side. The result means Jurgen Klopp’s side have secured back-to-back victories in the competition to strengthen their grip on second place in Group A.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at Anfield.

Nunez celebrates

Darwin Nunez may not have had a goal to celebrate, but there was plenty to enthuse the Liverpool striker. And not all of it was completely obvious.

Having gone head-to-head with Rangers centre-back Connor Goldson and received a ticking off from referee Clement Turpin, Nunez shortly afterwards played an ambitious ball inside that was easily intercepted.

But keen to make amends, the Uruguayan then followed possession and produced a lunging block to halt the attack and concede a throw-in - prompting clenched fists from the player. He was up for this one, for sure.

Hendo the mimic

At first glance, it appeared a routine spot kick when Mohamed Salah thumped down the middle after waiting for Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor to commit to his dive. But closer inspection revealed a different story.

As Salah went through his normal pre-shot routine of taking several quick steps to the right before racing up to strike the ball, in the background - and in McGregor's direct eyeline - Jordan Henderson mimicked the exact motions before racing towards the goal.

Henderson had done the same during the Community Shield win over Manchester City when Salah also scored from the spot. Best keep doing it, then.

Van Dijk no pushover

As a former Celtic player, Virgil van Dijk perhaps had extra reason to want to put one over Rangers. And there was an incident early on that brought back memories of his Old Firm clashes.

A few minutes into the game, Van Dijk was moving forward down the left when he was approached by Malik Tillman - and promptly put the Rangers midfielder on his backside with a meaty shove.

It didn't take long for social media to point out he'd famously done exactly the same to former Rangers man Nicky Law in the 2015 Scottish League Cup semi-final at Hampden. Somehow neither push was penalised!

Klopp confused

Jurgen Klopp was all smiles after the match when he walked through the mixed zone, the area inside the Anfield where the media seek - usually in vain - a brief chat with the game's main contributors.

The Liverpool boss, though, quickly changed his look to one of confusion and a little annoyance when he heard his own voice coming from the gathered hacks.

Perhaps Klopp thought someone was performing a rather good impression of his distinctive tones. Instead, though, it was a previous interview being played through the phone of one of the journalists. Confrontation avoided. Phew.
