Never mind the quality, feel the points. At the start of a pivotal fortnight, Liverpool did what was required to ensure the Kop went home happy and Manchester City, at least for a little while, were eclipsed.
“Liverpool, Liverpool top of the league!” came the chant, followed by familiar strains of “We shall not be moved”, and of course, this season’s favourite, “The Reds have got no money”.
Having stood a mammoth 14 points adrift of City mid-January – albeit with two games in hand – that Jurgen Klopp’s side were able to move to the Premier League summit for the first time in six months was a significant, if only temporary, moment. Next Sunday’s meeting between the two front-runners at the Etihad, which could go some way towards determining the destination of the title, has been teed up perfectly.

Jurgen Klopp makes Joe Gomez Liverpool promise after 'tricky' admission
Jurgen Klopp insists that Joe Gomez will play “a lot of games” for Liverpool following his performance against Watford.
Gomez started at right-back in the Saturday early kick-off, in place of Trent Alexander-Arnold, who had to settle for a place on the bench after recently recovering from a hamstring injury. Gomez provided the assist for Diogo Jota’s opening goal, and played a key role in helping Liverpool keep their 18th clean sheet of the campaign in the top flight.
It was just the 24-year-old's sixth Premier League appearance this season, and only his second start, having previously only featured for just 105 minutes before the clash against Watford. This lack of game time has led to tentative speculation over Gomez's future at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp plea eventually heard as true Diogo Jota danger emerges at Liverpool
For the best part of 25 minutes, Jurgen Klopp's demand was falling on the deaf ears of the Liverpool fans at Anfield.
"We need the best 12.30pm atmosphere ever!" Klopp said on Friday in what was something of an impassioned, pre-match plea to rouse a response across the stands here on Saturday lunchtime.
"If you cannot shout or sing, then stay at home and give your ticket to someone else, please."
After 22 minutes, it looked as though the supporters, having gone 13 days without seeing their team in action, were failing to meet the call of their manager.
Enter Diogo Jota in what must now be considered textbook and trademark style. The No.20 had barely had a kick other than one speculative effort that he miscued horribly over the bar early on.
But then Joe Gomez floated one into the six-yard box and the Portuguese pounced.
