'What kind of an answer is that?' - Jamie Carragher mocks Peter Schmeichel's Manchester United claim

Jamie Carragher was reduced to fits of laughter after former rival Peter Schmeichel claimed that Manchester United could win this season's Champions League.

Ex- Liverpool defender Carragher, who won European football's most coveted prize in 2005, was a guest in the BT Sport Studio on Tuesday evening, alongside Micah Richards and Thierry Henry.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Schmeichel was in Lisbon for the Broadcaster, reporting on Manchester City's 5-0 triumph against Sporting.

But when Richards asked him a direct questions about United's own chances in the competition his reply drew an unremorseful response from the studio guests.

Speaking to Schmeichel, Richards said: "Peter, do you honestly believe that Manchester United can win the Champions League? Be honest with me now, no messing around."

Taking a moment to think about it, Schmeichel replied: "Yes! What type of a question is that?"

After the panel descended into fits of hysterics, Carragher retorted: "What type of an answer is that?"

United are considered somewhat of an outside bet to lift the trophy this year at 22/1, way behind hot favourites City at 9/4. Liverpool are the bookies' third favourites, with Bayern Munich sandwiched in-between the two Premier League clubs.

Jurgen Klopp's side will get their knockout stage action underway this evening against Inter Milan in the San Siro, while United will have to wait until next week, when they face Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid, who knocked Liverpool at at the same stage of the competition back in 2020 - the last match to be played in front of spectators before the Covid-19 pandemic took a grip of the United Kingdom.

United's current form makes Schmeichel's Champions League claims look somewhat ambitious, ever more so given that only minutes earlier he had said that he couldn't see a team in Europe that could stop Manchester City in their current form.
