What it's really like to be a Style Award judge on Aintree's Ladies Day

Aintree's Ladies Day is over for another year and that means we have a new Style Award winner for 2023.

Having covered Aintree's Grand National in previous years for the Liverpool ECHO, this year I joined the Style Award judging panel alongside Natasha Jonas, Gemma Cutting, Frankie Foster and Kady McDermott. We were tasked with narrowing down entrants to a top three, before deciding the overall winner.

Walking around Aintree this morning, I knew deciding a winner would be tough as there were so many lovely outfits. Despite the fact the rain started at 11am and continued throughout the day, everyone still managed to look amazing.

Trends on the course this year were bright colours particularly fuchsia and royal blue as well as florals. Florals is one of the main reasons the Style Award was chosen.

While it was hard to narrow it down to a top three, eventual winner Sian Jones, from Ellesmere Port, stood out from the start and was one of the first people we all agreed should definitely be in the top three. She wore a flowery yellow co-ord set made up of a long sleeved crop top and maxi skirt.

Each of the top three has something different; third place was Carmen Lee who was wearing a purple one shoulder dress with a YSL bag and a purple headpiece. Second place went to Steve Mulholland who was wearing a tailored suit with grey waistcoat and navy blue tie.

While it was hard picking the top three it was nice to see how happy the finalists all were to have been chosen. As we all waited backstage before going on to announce the winner each of them seemed shocked to have been selected.

It was important to me that the winner was someone who didn't necessarily spend a lot of money on their outfit but was able to dress it up and wear their outfit with confidence and I am pleased with our chosen winner as I think she ticks all those boxes.

I'd encourage anyone who is regretting not entering this year's contest to definitely get ready to enter it in 2024, as it is such a fun experience and a good chance to show off your outfit - and we all know how long it can take to decide on a races outfit.
