What it's like to live among Liverpool's most historic buildings

The Georgian Quarter is teeming with listed buildings, landmarks such as the Anglican Cathedral and the Philharmonic, and numerous bars and restaurants which bring students, tourists and locals flooding to its streets.

Among the rich history, people still go about their daily lives, drinking in the buzz of living among the city's oldest homes.

The ECHO has spoken to a number of people who call this part of the city 'home' to find out what it's really like to live in one of the city's most historic neighbourhoods and what they would like to see in the future.

Martine Williams, 23, lives on Catharine Street and moved to the area 18 months ago following a break up. She told the ECHO: "I was having trouble finding somewhere that felt like home, I fell in love with this area as it’s full of creative people and it was really easy to connect with people here.

"It’s really nice to be a part of Liverpool’s history, I will always remember this part of my life, living in this area in my early 20’s. The architecture is timeless, I couldn’t imagine living in a new build after living here."

Martine is also a massive fan of the Georgian Quarter's past residents: "Pete Burn’s lived on Catharine Street in his early 20s as well, he’s one of my heroes so it’s really cool to imagine how that part of this area hasn’t changed, it’s always been full of creatives."

She told the ECHO she would love to see more artist-led galleries opening in the Georgian Quarter, as well as indie gig venues back open. She also thinks the area has become more expensive to live in: "I know this isn’t a unique experience," she added.

Olivia Roseanna is a relatively new resident of the area. The art director and stylist relocated from London earlier this year.

She told the ECHO she has a "better quality of life" here: "I've been enjoying exploring and getting to know my new neighbourhood. I love Georgian architecture, and have always wanted to live in a Georgian building with original features and high ceilings.

"I also like how it's walking distance to the city centre but still has a neighbourhood feel."

Olivia was also attracted to the history of this part of the city: "It’s got a beautiful depth. You can almost imagine Victorian life happening around you as the buildings and streets are all so well preserved.

"As a creative I find it really inspiring to be close to so many beautiful buildings, I love walking around and looking at all the little details, the street lamps at night remind me of old movies."

She'd like to see more restaurants and cafes join the area and welcomes tourists with open arms: "I like that people want to come here and appreciate our beautiful city. The open top tour bus stops right outside my house!"

While it's a talking point for architecture buffs, the Georgian Quarter is also famous on the big and small screen and has been used for filming for the likes of Peaky Blinders.

Robbie, who is 63 and has lived on Rice Street for 23 years, shared his fond memories of living on a film set: "They're making films every five minutes" he told the ECHO. "They made Cilla in the pub. It was snowing outside, I told Sheridan Smith to come into mine. She was here for two weeks, I couldn't get rid of her!

"It's a fanatic area to live in, if it wasn't I wouldn't have been here for 23 years."
