What is Wordle and how can I play? Viral daily word puzzle takes internet by storm

A free-to-use word guessing game has become a viral sensation.

Wordle, created by New York City-based British developer Josh Wardle, has exploded in popularity, going from 90 daily players in November to over 300,000 in early January.

You may have seen players post images of coloured blocks on their social media pages to indicate their scores, and wondered what they're on about.

Wordle is a word puzzle that challenges players to correctly guess a five-letter word in just six attempts.

After each guess, green, yellow and grey blocks indicate which letters are correct and in the right or wrong place.

Every day, Worlde uploads a new challenge for players to try.

How to play Wordle

The game is completely free to play, Josh made it first for his partner, reports Mail Online. Although copycat apps exist - and are being clamped down on by Apple - the original game is playable through a phone or computer web browser at https://www.powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/

You simply click onto the webpage and the game is available to play straight away.

You get six attempts to guess the five-letter word of the day.

After each attempt, a green block shows a letter is in the correct place, a yellow block means the letter is in the word but in the wrong position, and a grey block indicates that letter is not in the word the player is trying to guess.

After playing, Wordle gives you the option to share your result, and a timer for when the next game goes live.

While the developer is British, Wordle so far has used American spellings as the game was created in New York City, so keep that in mind for your guesses - on January 6 the correct answer was "favor" a word spelled "favour" in British English.

There is an app on the App stores called 'Wordle', but it is not the same game.

There is just one Wordle quiz per day, and every player attempts to find the same word.

The simplicity and lack of adverts are factors in the game's popularity.

"I think people kind of appreciate that there’s this thing online that’s just fun,” Mr Wardle said in the New York Times. “It’s not trying to do anything shady with your data or your eyeballs. It’s just a game that’s fun.”
