What is the viral mustard meme inspired by Kendrick Lamar?

Kendrick Lamar recently dropped a surprise new album, but that is not all the superstar rapper has given us.

Along with his new album GNX, the US star has provided us with one of the biggest memes of the year.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper dropped his sixth album on Saturday, November 23 - but it is one song in particular that has captured the attention of social media.

It was the song ‘TV Off’ which has exploded online - here is everything we know about why.

What is the new ‘mustard’ meme inspired by Kendrick Lamar?

The track ‘TV Off’ is from the new album and has been produced by DJ Mustard.

A couple of minutes into the song, Lamar screams the word “mustard” – just after the producer’s tag “Mustard on the beat, ho” is heard.

It is a stand-out moment on the song, and the album, and fans were quick to jump on the clip to make it a viral internet sensation.

Who has got involved in the mustard meme online?

Who hasn’t is probably the more accurate question...

The internet sensation has been picked up by fans making their own versions of videos with the audio attached, as well as major worldwide companies.

Some of them included McDonald’s as well as an appearance from the Minions:

And even pastors are getting involved during church sermons:

Other hilarious memes can also be seen all over the internet:

And football teams are even getting involved:

What is the hype with Kendrick Lamar’s new album?

The album has made big news because it was released with no one aware it was coming.

The California rapper posted a link on social media to the new secret album, named GNX, which features 12 songs running to just over 44 minutes in total.

GNX is the 37-year-old’s sixth album and features SZA, Kamasi Washington and Mexican musician Deyra.

Jack Antonoff, a frequent collaborator with Taylor Swift, is credited as a producer on all the tracks except one. There were rumours Swift herself would appear on the album but they proved incorrect.

Kendrick, one of the world’s most streamed music artists, currently boasts around 60.7 million monthly listeners on Spotify. He has won multiple Grammys and a Pulitzer Prize for Music.

Two weeks ago, Lamar landed seven nominations for the 2025 Grammy Awards, with five for Not Like Us, the Drake diss track. The awards will take place in February.
