A new law has come into force which could see protesters face up to 10 years in prison as well as receiving tough fines. The series of controversial new laws have been passed under the Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts (PCSC) Bill and came into force last week (June 28) which will see changes in police powers.
Most controversially, police will now be able to put more conditions on protests which some argue restricts human rights. Judges will now be able to give life sentences to those who kill whilst driving and domestic abuse victims will be given more time to report incidents.
The PCSC Bill received Royal Assent in April and police forces have only just been able to act on it from yesterday (June 28). Below, we will outline what new laws have been introduced and highlight what has changed.
