OpenAI is taking its AI assistant beyond simple conversations. At its annual developer conference in San Francisco, CEO Sam Altman introduced Dots, a new type of personal AI agent designed to take on tasks and keep working in the background.
The idea is that instead of only asking ChatGPT questions, users can give Dots a goal and let it handle parts of the work. So, what is OpenAI Dots and what can it actually do?
What is OpenAI Dots?
OpenAI says Dots are designed to handle a wide range of tasks. That includes scheduling meetings, making travel arrangements, managing budgets, debugging computer systems and writing software code.
Users give a Dot a goal and set limits for what it is allowed to do independently. It can then continue working without needing constant instructions, reaching out when it needs more information or attention.
"It's like an AI helper that always has your back, inspired by the cool versions of what we all watched in movies growing up," Altman said during his keynote at DevDay.
"You can delegate ambitious pieces of work the way you would to a high agency engineer or a chief of staff that you work with," he added.
OpenAI describes Dots as "always-on agents built to handle everything." The company also says the assistants are "an extension of you."
Dots are available through OpenAI's ChatGPT platform. The company said future versions will allow people to communicate with the agents through phone and text.
