What is a 'vanilla girl'? The viral TikTok makeup trend that highlights cosy minimalism

A new aesthetic has taken over TikTok, known as 'vanilla girl', characterised by light, natural makeup and easy-going outfits.

The trend follows on from the 'clean girl' aesthetic, which similarly promoted minimal makeup with glowy skin, and dominated the app in 2022. However, the trend came under fire for promoting an unobtainable perfection.

Vanilla girl outfits are defined by cosy, tactile textures and airy, neutral colours like white, beige, cream and, well, vanilla. Girls making videos about the aesthetic often wear linen shirts, soft bed shorts, cashmere cardigans and cosy knits.
