What is a ceasefire and how did my MP vote in the Commons?

UK MPs have voted to reject an amendment calling for an "immediate ceasefire" in Gaza.

MPs voted on Wednesday 293 to 125 against the Scottish National Party's (SNP) King Speech amendment.

Several prominent Labour frontbenchers were among those who broke ranks to support a ceasefire, dealing a blow to leader Sir Keir Starmer.

At least 11,000 Palestinians, many of whom were children, have now been killed as a result of the ongoing Israeli-Hamas conflict. Rising civilian casualty numbers have prompted worldwide calls for a ceasefire.

However, some leaders — including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Mr Starmer — have instead suggested a pause would be more appropriate than a ceasefire. Mr Starmer had instructed his party to abstain from the SNP amendment.

The result of the vote has prompted considerable chaos within the House of Commons, with the rebellion leading to several Labour frontbench resignations.

Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf also said he was "beyond angry," suggesting those who voted against the amendment had failed to put "humanity before politics".

Crowds had also gathered outside the Houses of Parliament as the vote was taking place, with people urging their MPs to back the amendment and put a stop to the killing.

So what exactly is a ceasefire — and why is it so difficult to agree to one?

What is a ceasefire?

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, the official definition of a ceasefire is "an agreement, usually between two armies, to stop fighting in order to allow discussions about peace."

In Gaza's case, people around the world are calling for a ceasefire between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and Hamas fighters in Palestinian territories.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has resisted international calls to stop his forces from advancing through Gaza, demanding that 240 hostages be released.

Some world leaders, such as the US President Joe Biden, have also resisted demands to call for a ceasefire.

The negotiation of a ceasefire involves navigating a complex web of political, historical, social, and strategic factors. Finding common ground amid these complexities is often a delicate and time-consuming process.

Which MPs voted for a ceasefire?

A total of 125 MPs voted for the ceasefire amendment. However, this wasn't enough for the amendment to pass.

Among those who voted for the change were 56 Labour MPs — including a number of frontbenchers from Mr Starmer's shadow cabinet.

A full list of MPs and their voting decision can be found on the UK Gov website.
